Master formula against diarrhea and nest mortality
In the culture there are sometimes large losses of nestlings caused by bacterial diarrhea during the first week of life. Although the breeding birds themselves look perfect and they feed their young excellently, diarrhea can occur and cause wet nests as the fry are no longer enveloped by a membrane. Under these conditions it is no longer possible for the parents to remove the excrement and thus the nest becomes dirty and wet.
The breeding doll often gets a damp abdomen from sitting on a soiled wet nest. One then speaks of the “sweat disease”. The young stop growing and die after a few days.
However, it is possible to avoid all this by providing the newborn boy with a medication that prevents bacterial diarrhea. In collaboration with Pantex Holland, Dr. Coutteel has developed Starter Mix for this. This treatment is done through the drinking water and is given to the young by the parents from hatching, so day 1, for 1 week.
